They're asking 'why are you a sensible candidate for this specific role?' — not for your biography. Answer in about 90 seconds using present, past, future. **Present**: what you do now and one line of scope. 'I'm a frontend developer at a fintech startup, currently owning the customer dashboard used by about 40,000 users.' **Past**: the two or three steps that made you relevant to *this* job. Skip anything that doesn't build the case. Nobody needs your school unless you graduated last year. **Future**: why this role, now. 'I've moved steadily toward design-systems work, and this role is that full time, which is why I applied.' What makes the difference between a forgettable answer and a strong one: 1. **Tailor it to the job description.** Read what they emphasised and make sure your answer touches those things. If the posting stresses collaboration with product, mention working with product. 2. **Include one concrete number or outcome.** 'Cut page load from 4s to 1.2s' is memorable; 'passionate about performance' is not. 3. **End with a forward-looking sentence** that hands the conversation back. It signals you're finished and gives them a thread to pull. 4. **Practise out loud, not in your head.** Time yourself. Most people run to three or four minutes without realising, and the interviewer disengages around ninety seconds. The common mistakes: starting with childhood, listing every job chronologically, reciting the resume they're already holding, and being so vague it could be anyone's answer.
