How do I plan my day the night before so mornings don't evaporate?

My mornings vanish into deciding what to do, checking messages, and suddenly it's noon. People keep saying 'plan the night before' — what does a version of that which survives real life look like?

The version that survives real life is small and boring — five minutes, three decisions: 1. Pick tomorrow's ONE non-negotiable (the task that makes the day a win alone) + two secondaries. Not a 12-item list: lists that long are wish inventories, and wish inventories create morning paralysis. 2. Assign the non-negotiable a time and place: 'draft the proposal, 9:00–10:30, desk, before opening anything with a red badge.' Implementation intentions ('at TIME in PLACE I will X') roughly double follow-through in the research versus goals alone — it's the single best-evidenced trick in this genre. 3. Stage the start physically: document open, tab set, notes beside keyboard. Morning-you inherits a runway, not a decision. Deciding IS the vulnerable step — so make yesterday-you do it. Two rules that protect the system: - Messages after the first block, not before. The first 90 minutes on inputs makes you a responder all day; whoever emails you sets your agenda. - Plan tomorrow at a fixed trigger (right after dinner, or when shutting the laptop) so the planning itself doesn't depend on remembering. Expect ~60–70% of days to go to plan — that's a working system, not a failing one. The old baseline was noon.
