Remote vs office for early career growth — what's the honest trade-off?

Two offers: fully remote vs hybrid office role, similar pay. Everyone over 35 says 'go to office when young', everyone online says remote is freedom. First job — what actually matters?

For your FIRST job specifically, the boring advice is mostly right: presence accelerates early careers. Not because of productivity — because of osmosis. Year one is when you learn how good engineers debug, how decisions actually get made, how to ask questions without a meeting. In an office that's overheard and absorbed daily; remotely it must be deliberately scheduled, and juniors rarely schedule enough of it. The uncomfortable data point: early-career remote workers consistently report slower feedback loops and thinner relationships with decision-makers — which quietly becomes slower promotions. BUT remote works fine early IF the company is remote-native (written culture, real onboarding, assigned mentor) rather than 'office culture minus the office'. Ask them directly: how do juniors get mentored remotely? If the answer is vague, believe the vagueness. My actual recommendation: hybrid for years 1–3, bank the learning, then take the remote freedom once you're the person others learn from. Remote is a reward that compounds better with seniority.
