How do I use AI tools to study without becoming dependent on them?

ChatGPT explains everything instantly, which feels amazing — until I realized I retain almost nothing. How do you use it as a tool instead of a crutch?

The rule that fixed this for me: struggle first, AI second. The struggle IS the learning — retrieval effort is what builds memory. Ask AI too early and you skip the exact step that makes knowledge stick. Concrete protocol: 1. Attempt every problem for 15–20 minutes before asking anything. 2. Ask for hints, not answers: 'give me a nudge, don't solve it.' 3. After AI explains something, close the tab and re-explain it out loud or on paper. If you can't, you didn't learn it — you just watched it. 4. Use it hard for what it's genuinely best at: generating practice questions, checking your explanations, and 'explain this again assuming I don't know X'. AI as a tutor who quizzes you: multiplier. AI as an answer vending machine: you're renting understanding instead of owning it, and exams collect the rent.
