What questions should I ask the interviewer at the end of an interview?

'Do you have any questions for us?' — I always say something generic about culture and instantly regret it. What do strong candidates ask?

Ask things that show you're already thinking like a team member, and that get you real information: 1. 'What does the first 90 days look like for this role — what would make you say the hire was a success?' (Shows outcome-thinking, tells you the real expectations.) 2. 'What's the hardest problem the team is dealing with right now?' (Engineers light up answering this, and you learn what you'd actually work on.) 3. 'How does work get decided and assigned — who sets priorities?' (Reveals more about culture than any 'what's the culture like'.) 4. To your would-be manager: 'What separates the people who do well here from those who don't?' Avoid: anything Googleable, salary/leave in round one, and questions asked only to impress. Two or three genuine ones beat five performed ones — and asking nothing at all reads as checked-out.
