Cardio vs weight training for fat loss — which should I prioritize?

Trying to lose fat and getting contradictory advice: 'do cardio to burn calories' vs 'lift weights, cardio is a waste'. Limited time — which actually deserves priority?

The framing is the problem: fat loss is driven by neither — it's driven by a calorie deficit (eating less than you burn). Cardio and weights are just two tools that support that, and they do DIFFERENT jobs, so 'which burns fat' is the wrong question. What each actually does: - Weights: preserve (and build) muscle while you're in a deficit. This is the underrated one — losing weight without lifting means a chunk of the loss is muscle, which leaves you smaller-but-soft ('skinny fat') and lowers your metabolism. Lifting is what makes fat loss look GOOD rather than just lower on the scale. - Cardio: burns extra calories and improves heart health/endurance. Useful, but you cannot out-run a bad diet — an hour of running is undone by one careless snack, which is why 'just do cardio' fails so many people. So if time is limited, PRIORITIZE weights, keep cardio as a supplement: 1. Diet in a moderate deficit — this does the actual fat loss (~80% of the result). 2. Lift 3–4x/week — protects muscle so you lose fat, not tone. 3. Cardio 2–3x/week or just walk 8–10k steps daily — walking is the criminally underrated fat-loss tool: low fatigue, easy to sustain, meaningful calorie burn, doesn't wreck recovery. The body you're probably picturing when you say 'lose fat' comes from deficit + lifting, with cardio as seasoning. Priority order: nutrition > weights > steps/cardio.
